Newborn Bath Tips

Bath time can be a special time but also full of stress until you get the hang of it.

Follow these steps to a successful bath time:

1.     Gather all your supplies ahead of time (towel, unscented baby soap, plastic cup, washcloth).

2.     Don’t leave your baby alone even for one second.

3.     Place your baby bath in a sink or bathtub. Make sure the room is extra warm and allows you room to kneel or stand.

4.     Fill the tub with a few inches of warm water (check to temperature to make sure it is not too hot).

5.     While providing support to baby’s head, dip washcloth into the warm water and clean baby very gently including head and face. Pay special attention to the creases under the arms, behind ears, neck and diaper area.

6.     Make sure not to get soap in your baby’s eyes.

A few more tips:

1.     Newborns only need to be bathed 2-3 times a week.

2.     Don’t worry if your baby pees in the tub. You do not need to start over as urine is sterile.

3.     If your baby poops in the tub you will need to drain it and clean it out. Again, no worries but just be sure that the poop does not get in his mouth.

Baths can be calming for a fussy baby. We recommend incorporating bath time as part of your bedtime routine (at around 5 weeks old). With some advance preparation, and the right bath supplies, baby’s bath can not only be stress free but enjoyable!
